The Sanatan Awareness Equation

Sanatan Awareness Equation — SAE-1.4 (canonical)

A directional model for access to awareness — not deterministic physics, not prophecy

This is SAE-1.4 (canonical) — the single source of truth for the equation in this repository. It models accessto consciousness (how much of the constant light shines through your filters), not consciousness itself. It is a directional self-tracking model, not deterministic physics and not prophecy.

🔑What changed in SAE-1.4

  • Belief is a coherence gate, not a "gain coefficient": Belief_total = min(B1, B2), the weak-link of Orientation (B1) and Surrender (B2), in [−1, +1]. The phrase "gain coefficient" is retired.
  • Inversion regime: Belief_total can go negative — when coherence is organized against growth, the whole bracket inverts. (Replaces the old non-negative ε-floor formulation.)
  • Capacity clamp on Shakti: Shakti_effective = strength × stability × Capacity, with Capacity = max(0, 1 − physical − mental constraint).
  • Fairness invariant: constraint reduces outward expression only — never the underlying Witness. Illness/disability is never modeled as low consciousness.
  • Naming discipline: the model output is Awareness_raw (logged proxy: ObservedAwareness; bounded display: AwarenessIndex) — never bare "Awareness."
  • Developmental stage gate: infants/pre-reflective beings default to a neutral-positive Belief_total, never 0.
  • Validation exists: structurally tested (passes) and empirically pre-validated on synthetic data, with one failed sub-claim shown openly (see below).

The Core Equation (SAE-1.4, canonical)

What SAE-1.4 does NOT claim

  • It does not quantify Ātman (C = 1.0 is a convention).
  • It does not say illness, disability, or mental-health burden lowers consciousness.
  • It does not treat emotion as impurity by default, nor equate Shakti with physical force alone.
  • It does not predict fate, nor replace initiation, lineage, practice, or clinical care.
  • It is directional, not deterministic physics. Structural test passing is not empirical validation on real humans.
Canonical equation:
Awarenessraw(t) = Belieftotal(t) × [ C − Blockers(t) + Purity(t) + Shaktieffective(t) ] + εgrace(t)
with the coherence gate:
Belieftotal(t) = min( B1(t), B2(t) ),   ∈ [ −1, +1 ]

C = 1.0 (humans), invariant. This is a normalization convention for modeling, not a claim that Ātman is quantitatively measurable. Because C is constant, nothing in the equation can ever imply one person has "more consciousness" than another.

Interpretation: Awarenessraw is effective witness-access / shine-through — not ontological consciousness. εgrace(t) is the additive residual (breakthroughs, satsang, surrender, "bus factor"). This is a directional map, not a deterministic law; variables are coupled and gated.

Display only: for UI, raw is mapped to a bounded index, AwarenessIndex(t) = 50 + 50·tanh(Awarenessraw / k), k ≈ 1.5, ∈ [0, 100]. This is presentation, not core theory.

📘 Expanded Variable Definitions

1. Consciousness_constant

The intrinsic Atman / Shiva principle inside every sentient being (humans + animals). This is the pure witness and is modeled as a constant (1.0) for all sentient beings. Awareness is not how much Consciousness you "have" — it's how much of it can shine through the filters. Babies and animals have Consciousness_constant = 1.0; they do not have "zero belief therefore zero awareness."

2. Purity(t) – The Vishnu Module (System Stability)

Purity is a 6-dimensional vector that increases awareness by stabilizing the nervous system and moral structure. It corresponds to Sattva, Yama/Niyama, and Dharma:

Purity(t) is your alignment with Dharma; Dharma's definition is fixed. The variable is adherence, not redefinition. Dharma cannot be modified; Shakti is the engineering layer.

Purity(t) = Dharma-alignment (fixed): Purity(t) is Dharma-alignment. Dharma is treated as FIXED in SAE. We do NOT 'modernize' Dharma. Our engineering layer is Shakti, not Dharma. This is the non-negotiable stability layer (Vishnu/Yama–Niyama/Gita container).

🔑Model Note: Purity Double-Effect (Intentional Nonlinear Gain)

Purity appears in two places in the equation:

  1. Directly as an additive stabilizer in the bracket: Peff(t)
  2. Indirectly inside the Shakti governor Sstab (stability function)

This is intentional: Purity has compounding ROI (nonlinear gain). This is why Yama/Niyama / Dharma constraints are emphasized in classical systems: they stabilize the entire operating range. You cannot simply "raise purity" without lowering blockers (see coupling constraint below).

⚠️Critical: Purity–Blocker Coupling Constraint

High blockers (trauma, addiction, ego loops) directly cap how high certain purity dimensions can go—especially emotional regulation and discipline consistency.

Peff(t) ≤ Pmax(Bl(t), Cap(t))

Simple baseline constraint:

Peff(t) = min(Praw(t), 1 − Bl(t))

This directly encodes: You cannot simply "raise purity" without lowering blockers. In reality, not all purity dimensions couple equally—P₁ (regulation) strongly couples to trauma/anxiety, P₆ (discipline) couples to addiction/inertia, etc. A full vector coupling with a matrix Γ can be implemented later, but this simple constraint is the baseline.

  • P1 – Emotional Regulation – nervous system stability, calmness; supported by pranayama, meditation, Tara.

Emotion is Shakti-in-motion; regulation determines whether it becomes stability or a blocker. Emotion itself is not a blocker by default—when regulated it becomes usable Shakti and supports P1. When dysregulated it appears as Blockers (anger loops, panic loops, despair loops).

  • P2 – Ethical Alignment – living in accord with Dharma, Ahimsa, Satya; aligned with Gita, Yama.
  • P3 – Truthfulness – Satya and inner honesty; Jnana Yoga, self-inquiry (neti-neti).
  • P4 – Non-attachment – Vairagya; the anti-Moh component that allows letting go of clinging and aversion.
  • P5 – Compassion – Ahimsa, Karuna; heart purity, Bhakti, seeing the Divine in all.
  • P6 – Discipline Tapas; consistency in beneficial practices, order, Niyama.

3. Shakti_effective(t) — usable power, with capacity clamp

Capacity(t) = max( 0, 1 − PhysicalConstraint(t) − MentalConstraint(t) )

Shaktieffective(t) = Shaktistrength(t) × Shaktistability(t) × Capacity(t),  ∈ [0, 1]

The max(0, …) clamp prevents negative capacity when constraints sum above 1.

⚠️Fairness invariant (ethically load-bearing)

Constraint reduces outward throughput / expression, NOT the underlying Witness. The model MUST NOT equate illness, disability, or mental-health burden with low consciousness or low awareness-access at the substrate level. Mental constraint is modeled as capacity limitation, never as moral failing.

This is the Premanand / Ramakrishna point made structural: a weak or ill body can host very high awareness. Capacity affects stability and bandwidth, never Ātman.

Shakti here means voltage, life-force, Devi-power. The model separates raw energy from stability:

🔑Key Clarification: Shakti is NOT just physical strength

Sstr should be a multi-domain vector (and then aggregated):

  • S_body (physical vitality)
  • S_mind (focus/mental energy)
  • S_prana (felt life-force / breath vitality)
  • S_bhava (devotional/emotional energy)
  • S_tapas (capacity for sustained effort)
  • S_sankalpa (intentional force)

Sstr = Σ ai Si

Physical power (body strength/endurance) is ONE component. A weak/ill body can still host very high awareness (e.g., Ramakrishna / Premanand). Mahavidya Shakti is primarily about transformation/illumination, not bodybuilding/physical dominance.

High physical power without Purity can increase risk; it does not guarantee Awareness. Physical power can amplify Awareness only if Purity and Blockers are managed; otherwise it amplifies ego/instability.

  • Shakti_strength = Shakti_initial (birth energy) + Shakti_behavior (sadhana, creativity, work, sex-energy, movement) + Shakti_environment (city vs mountains vs rivers vs temples) + Shakti_input (food, music, people, pets, rituals).
  • Shakti_stability = g(Peff, Bl, Cap) – power grounded in ethics and emotional stability. High Shakti with low Purity = voltage frying the wiring.
  • Stability function: Sstab = clip(0, 1, (Peff × Cap) / (Peff × Cap + Bl + ε))
This ensures: high blockers collapse stability; purity and capacity restore stability.
  • Capacity (Cap) – hardware constraint (body/mind bandwidth). This is not "spiritual worth." It encodes container bandwidth and limits: which practices are feasible, how much energy can be safely processed, and how quickly instability appears under load. This is how we keep the model consistent with cases like high awareness with physical limitations (Premananda Maharaj / similar saints) because Cap affects stability and bandwidth, not Atman.

4. Blockers(t)

Blockers are the internal subtractive forces that cloud Awareness. They are not "sin points" but kleshas, conditioning, and trauma patterns:

  • Fear (Abhinivesha), shame, guilt, unresolved trauma.
  • Ego rigidity (Asmita), pride, stubbornness.
  • Addictions and compulsions (substance, work, attention).
  • Ichha collapse / unwillingness / inertia – refusal to improve, avoidance of responsibility, "I won't move". Low ichha (no willingness to improve) is treated as a mental blocker / inertia (klesha-style), not moral judgment.
  • Moh – attachment; clinging to people, outcomes, identity; reduces P4 and feeds Blockers. Moh = attachment/clinging. Moh (attachment) typically lowers P4 and increases Blockers.
  • Maya_distortion – illusions and false narratives from environment, culture, and mind that distort B1/B2 and perception. Maya = distortion/false narratives (environment + mind). Maya_distortion scrambles Belief_total and perception.
  • Biological and mental health factors (e.g., severe depression, psychosis) that distort perception and regulation.

5. Belief_total(t) – the coherence gate (the heart of SAE-1.4)

Belieftotal(t) = min( B1(t), B2(t) ),  ∈ [ −1, +1 ]

The weak-link rule: effective coherence is only as strong as its weakest foundational component. If either component collapses, the gate collapses. If either goes negative, the whole bracket inverts. (This retires the old non-negative ε-floor formulation; the phrase "gain coefficient" is retired with it.)

  • B1 — Orientation toward Truth / Growth (signed, [−1, +1]): "Am I pointed toward truth and transformation today, or organized against it?" +1 = genuinely choosing dharmic growth even under discomfort; 0 = autopilot; −1 = actively resisting growth (avoidance, self-sabotage, cynicism). B1 is the primary driver of the inversion regime.
  • B2 — Trust + Surrender to the container (signed, usually positive, [−1, +1]): "Do I trust this path / the sacred / my container enough to surrender even partial control?" +1 = can be guided and undone; 0 = control still dominant; −1 = active distrust or resentment toward the container.
CaseB1B2Belief_totalRegime
High faith, low surrender+0.8+0.1+0.1aligned but weak ("wants truth but won't let go")
Devotional comfort, anti-growth−0.4+0.7−0.4INVERSION (devotion as anesthesia)
Confident self, distrusts path+0.6−0.2−0.2INVERSION (friction against the vehicle)

⚠️The inversion regime (must accompany any negative output)

A negative Belief_total does not mean less consciousness, and does not mean "wrong religion." It means coherence is organized against truth/growth/alignment strongly enough that even available capacity may be routed in self-defeating ways. High capacity × negative gate = magnified self-defeat (the more powerful the system, the worse the inversion).

🔑Developmental stage gate

Prevents the model from implying infants/pre-reflective beings lack access to the Witness:

  • stage 0 (infant / pre-reflective): Belief_total = +0.5 (neutral-positive, NOT 0)
  • stage 1: Belief_total = +0.4
  • stage 2+: Belief_total = min(B1, B2)

6. εgrace(t) – Grace as additive residual

🔑Grace stays humble (do not 'compute God')

Grace is an additive, non-linear residual (Anugraha). Two SAE-compliant implementations: annotated (user-logged grace events — sudden insight, satsang, surrender), or residualgrace = ObservedAwareness − ModelAwareness).

Awarenessraw(t) = Belieftotal(t) × [ C − Blockers + Purity + Shaktieffective ] + εgrace(t)

This matches the principle: "If you can define the inputs to Grace, it's not Grace; it's just another variable." Bounding for display is handled separately by AwarenessIndex (the tanh transform), not by clipping the core model.

A stochastic additive term acknowledging non-linear events: spontaneous awakening, Guru-kripā, Shaktipat, near-death experience, or "out-of-proportion" insights that cannot be predicted purely from the other variables. In Sanatan terms, this is Anugraha – Grace.

Interpretation: Awarenessraw(t) is what the model predicts given the variables. εgrace(t) is the additive residual variance that cannot be modeled deterministically.

7. OverdriveRisk — the safety governor (NOT in the core equation)

OverdriveRisk(t) = Shaktistrength(t) × ( 1 − Purity(t) )

"High voltage + low purity fries the wiring." This is a derived control metric, used to gate practice intensity — never to rewrite the core equation. A stability gate (minimum clarity, regulation, discernment, boundary, support) comes before any intensification. This is the basis for any practice-intensity gating in HOPE.

Validation status (honest)

SAE-1.4 has been structurally tested (passes) and empirically pre-validated on honest synthetic data (it beats baselines out-of-sample, with one pre-registered hypothesis that failed — shown openly below). It has NOT been validated against real human data or real consciousness. The honest status: a formally specified, internally tested, empirically testable directional model — not a proven description of consciousness.

TestResult
Structural invariants (5,000 trials)all PASS
Out-of-sample fit (synthetic)R² ≈ 0.896 (components) vs ≈ 0.156 baseline; 0.584 fixed-form
Directionality (cross-lag)Blockers(t)→Awareness(t+1): β = −6.19, p ≈ 3e−11; reverse null
Falsification (shown openly)“Purity(t)→fewer future Blockers” did NOT hold (β ≈ 0, p ≈ 0.91)
Fairness (matched subgroups)high- vs low-constraint differ by only +2.70 / 100

⚠️Honest scope — confidence and caveat travel together

Validates: structure, internal coherence, falsifiability, baseline-beating on synthetic data. Does NOT validate: that SAE-1.4 describes real consciousness — the data is synthetic. Structural tests ≠ empirical validation.

Real validation requires real, anonymized HOPE logs (≥ 60–120 days) with a daily ObservedAwareness proxy. The falsification finding is the first thing to re-test against real logs. Publishing a real failure openly is the strongest pro-credibility move available.
